Nokia + Globe's Environmental Initiatives

This is a horribly late (2 months to be exact) post, so I'll get right down to it.

I attended a Globe + Nokia event at GB5 for the launching of Nokia's environment related campaign to address how old cellphones are disposed of. It's innovative in the sense it gives credit to people who do that, via these drop off containers that will be placed at Globe branches (or is probably there already considering how late this is):

Elop's Rant Was All A Show!

Amazing how things have transpired over at Nokia in the past few days.

First, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop released his 'Burning Platform' memo, purportedly only for Nokia employees but obviously easily leaked on after (as planned?). It's a fantastic read that sparked hope that things would change for the mobile giant whom Elop himself described as 'lost market share, lost mind share and lost time'. I couldn't get enough of it and read it several times the day it came out. In the era of the well - crafted press release, memes and fake virals, I felt it was an honest breath of fresh air. If I were a Nokia developer I would have truly been excited, especially in the light of its failure to keep up with everyone else and the positive changes it promised.

A few days later though, I received a bombshell of a Press Release from Nokia, entitled "Nokia and Microsoft announce plans for a broad strategic partnership to build a new global ecosystem [PR link]'. I was dumbfounded. 'NO Stephen!', I felt like shouting, thinking naively that maybe the man had sold to an MS sales pitch and maybe it was all a knee jerk reaction to wanting to change things asap. Soon as I read the whole thing though, doubt started to creep in. It smelled like a pre - planned move.

The Epic Monumental LG and Nokia Sale Fail And Its Online Implications

Times like these are when I'm glad I'm not a gadget-head. LG and Nokia both released simultaneous one - day sales for today, Nov. 13, 2010. Nokia promised to sell their C6 for only P6,490.00, while LG was selling their Optimus One phone at half price for only P12,990.00.

It turned out both sales were too good to be true. At this very moment, the local internet is on fire with complaints as to how both brands were unable to provide enough phones or even accommodate the thousands that showed up at their stores all over the country. Abe Olandres wrote about the 'aftermath' of the sale, and already there are close to 200 comments, nearly all of which condemn both sales, particularly LG, for not having foreseen the multitudes that showed up.

Emotions run high and there is already talk about mass collective action to bring the situation to the DTI. LG's facebook page has also been 'under attack' from irate commenters as well.

Nokia Philippines Selects New PR agency

Got this email from Nokia this morning:
Nokia Philippines has appointed Fuentes Manila as its public relations agency in the Philippines. Following success in a competitive pitch, Fuentes Manila will start work on the Nokia Philippines  business beginning October 16, 2010, working closely with Nokia to develop and execute communications campaigns for the Philippine market.
The selection of Fuentes Manila marks a new era for Nokia, with the incumbent PR agency Bridges.com, making the decision not to repitch after a very successful 10 years working on Nokia’s business. Nokia Philippines’ corporate communications manager, Nikka Abes, said: “Bridges.com has contributed a great deal to building the Nokia brand in the Philippines and we are very grateful for its support over the last decade.  We fully respect its decision to focus on new challenges and we hope our new agency relationship proves to be just as long and fruitful.”

Nokia Makes Strong Case For Youth Market With The C3

Had a great time seeing old friends at the well - attended Nokia C3 Launch last week, where we were fairly well entertained by the school motif they adopted to launch the C3.

Nokia N97 Launched

Last Thursday, July 25th, the Nokia N97 was launched to the press. First impression was how light and relatively small it was considering all it could do. Consider: Both touch and qwerty capabilities, 5mp, 48gb (32gb internal) capacity and what promised to be a quick, responsive operating system that best makes use of its HSDPA and WLAN capabilities (ie, accessing Facebook, Flickr and such), all accessible on 3.5" of LCD real estate.
