Elop's Rant Was All A Show!

Amazing how things have transpired over at Nokia in the past few days.

First, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop released his 'Burning Platform' memo, purportedly only for Nokia employees but obviously easily leaked on after (as planned?). It's a fantastic read that sparked hope that things would change for the mobile giant whom Elop himself described as 'lost market share, lost mind share and lost time'. I couldn't get enough of it and read it several times the day it came out. In the era of the well - crafted press release, memes and fake virals, I felt it was an honest breath of fresh air. If I were a Nokia developer I would have truly been excited, especially in the light of its failure to keep up with everyone else and the positive changes it promised.

A few days later though, I received a bombshell of a Press Release from Nokia, entitled "Nokia and Microsoft announce plans for a broad strategic partnership to build a new global ecosystem [PR link]'. I was dumbfounded. 'NO Stephen!', I felt like shouting, thinking naively that maybe the man had sold to an MS sales pitch and maybe it was all a knee jerk reaction to wanting to change things asap. Soon as I read the whole thing though, doubt started to creep in. It smelled like a pre - planned move.

Computerworld's 25 Years Of Windows

Just checked out Computerworld's commemoration article re MS Windows after 25 years, with pictures of its 11 versions starting with 1985's Windows 1.0, 1987's Windows 2.0, 1990's Windows 3.0, 1993's Windows NT 3.1, 1995's Windows 95, 1998's Windows 98, 2000's Windows 2000 and Windows ME, 2001's Windows XP, 2006's Vista and finally 2009's Windows 7.

A few things I thought of after reading it:

MS Makes Something Useful

In the 'why didn't anyone else do this' department, Microsoft has made it possible for klutz types like myself to load batteries any way we like and our gadgets will still run.

Java vs. MS Lives and Breathes

And here I was thinking the Java / MS wars were over, and we had therefore lost an interesting rivalry. Until I saw this.

It gets NSFW at around 2:45, so careful!

A Windows Home Server Sneak Preview from the Windows Team Blog, with a voice over that sounds like the guy who coded it.

400mb. Not Enough for WinXP SP3?

This latest adventure in PC repair started when Jill's cousin Tessa asked me to fix her Acer Aspire One Netbook, which was exhibiting virus infected behavior. A quick thorough scan in Safe Mode using PCCillin's web - based virus scan revealed the culprit.

Microsoft Bloggers VIP Mix

I attended the Microsoft Bloggers VIP Mix last January 28, 2010 for Tech Exchange and my lifestyle blog Animetric's World. It's my first Microsoft event ever so I didn't have the faintest notion of what I was in for.

Chrome OS: It's Not About Beating MS

First of all, let me tell you I've never been excited about anything in a long time. 4 years ago, I made a post on my old blog re how I thought Google would eventually release their own OS. Obviously that didn't happen immediately, but I never gave up on the idea because it always made sense to me that they should. They certainly have the resources plus the following to get it going, and after 4 years they've developed even more web apps that a centralized app, such as an os, just to connect to these would make sense.

And to me, that's what it's all about. Which surprises me that so much news about Google's OS has it pitted against Microsoft, which is beside the point if not completely outside it altogether.

The New Windows Commercials

You might as well be hiding under a rock if you haven't seen or heard about the new Windows commercials in the US. What gets me is, from CNet to YouTube to Engadget, people (the commenters, I mean) mostly can't wait to find every possible thing to diss about Microsoft. I can't help be wary about doing that myself because I really really wanna be as unbiased as possible. Following below are my attempts:
