I set up a Drupal Meetup 2 weeks ago and so far 13 people have joined up!
I've decided to take up the promotion of open source as my 'advocacy'. I believe everyone should take up a pet project, something they believe to be beneficial to society. Some people build houses for the poor, some donate time to support groups, I've decided this is the best one for me. I deal with Drupal on a daily basis, am somewhat proficient in it, my business can also benefit from it, and finally I believe it deserves to be promoted in the country, particularly the government.
I'm interested to see what we can do to 'sell' the idea of Open Source, via Drupal, to the government. It's a lofty goal and a rather opaque one at the moment, but I'm sure we can break it down into 'doable' tasks so to speak. I can use all the techniques PR companies have been using on me for this goal.
But before anything else, I need to meetup with others who are also believers of Drupal, and then try to 'evangelize' this idea to them. This is beyond mere geekery, way way beyond saying 'ooh' and 'aah' at nice shiny things, which I feel the local tech industry and tech media has degenerated to. This is using technology to try and improve society.
I hope I know what I'm doing, but I think I do. If not now, and not me, then when and who?
